The Society for Pre and Post Natal Services (SPANS) successfully held its inaugural International conference branded “International Conference on Maternal Mental Health in Africa” (ICAMMHA) from the 12thto the 16thof December 2016 in Harare at New Ambassador Hotel.

The conference afforded the participants the opportunity to network, to learn from one another and the chance to explore ideas. Delegates delivered their presentations and had the question and answer segment.

The convening of the 2nd International Conference on Maternal Mental Health in Africa (ICAMMHA 2017) in Malawi in November, 2017 represents a remarkable opportunity to draw attention to the diverse nature of the African regions to maternal and mental health problems and their commitment to respond to it.

THE CONFERENCE

The annual International Conference on Maternal Mental Health in Africa is the leading gathering for mental health practitioners, academics, policy makers, donor community, corporate world, church and others who are committed to promote good maternal mental health in Africa. It is also an incredible opportunity for researchers from around the globe to share the latest scientific advances in the field, learn from one another’s expertise, and develop strategies for advancing all facets of our collective efforts to prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, fight stigma and self-stigmatization and cure of mental illnesses across the life cycle with particular attention on the pre and post natal phase. ICAMMHA 2017 is expected to call together over 300 delegates from nearly 150 countries, including 10 journalists.

THE ORGANISERS

SOCIETY FOR PRE AND POST NATAL SERVICES is the organizer of ICAMMHA 2017 in collaboration with LINK FOR CITIZEN EMPOWERMENT & DEVELOPMENT, QUEEN OF PEACE and other international and local partners. The issue of maternal and mental health problems in Africa is still a contested terrain, there are no definitive conclusions which have been drawn out to ascertain and explain this phenomenon of maternal and mental health problems in many societies. Our societies are being overwhelmed with a lot of speculative information on the risk factors associated with maternal and mental health problems amongst the reproductive age groups.

THE VALUE

ICAMMHA observed that there is little ink on research, programming, interventions and initiatives put towards this lacuna/grey area of maternal and mental health problems and it’s co-occurring. ICAMMHA will be a driving force for urgent action to curb maternal and mental health problems, screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation centers within communities, public policies on maternal and mental health problems, preventative strategies and to help the countries to fulfill their gaps. ICAMMA is motivated by the existing deficit in the quality, availability and accessibility of antenatal and postnatal mental health care and the lack of knowledge about these issues amongst health and social work professionals and the broad public.
